United Kingdom: Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)

What is an ETA?
Enacted in early 2025, an ETA (electronic travel authorization) is an online application that gives you permission to travel into the UK for up to six months for tourism, short-term study, business trips, or to visit family and friends. If you are visiting the UK for another reason, you can check to see if you need a travel visa.
Who needs an ETA?
United States citizens and citizens of other eligible countries, including infants and children, may need an ETA. Further explanation is available on the UK ETA website.
How do I apply for an ETA ?
The fastest way to apply for an ETA is to use the UK ETA app on the App Store or Google Play.
- You will need to upload or take photos of your passport and pay a minimal fee.
- If you cannot use the app, or if you are applying for someone else who is not with you, you should apply online.
- You should be notified in three (3) business days if you are approved.
How often do I need to renew?
You will need to reapply every two years or when your passport expires, whichever comes first.
European Union and Schengen area: ETIAS Authorization

What is ETIAS?
Expected to launch in late 2026, an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is a pre-screening process that is designed to enhance security across European borders; this is not a travel visa. An ETIAS could be needed for short-term stays for up to 90 days within a 180-day period for 30 European countries in the Schengen Area.
What countries are expected to require an ETIAS?
A list of the countries where an ETIAS may be needed for is on the authorization’s application website. These include the following, for example.
- France
- Austria
- Germany
- Italy
- Spain
- Sweeden
- Greece
- Netherlands
Who would need to apply for an ETIAS?
United States citizens and citizens of other visa-exempt countries, including infants and children, may need an ETIAS. Further explanation is available on ETIAS’ website.

If you are traveling to both the UK and the EU, you may need both an ETA and ETIAS before your trip. By preparing for your European adventure in advance, you can look forward to smooth travels.
To help further plan your journey, CVG has recently introduced a tool on its website that allows you to explore photos, tourist attractions, and other must-see places across the airport’s more than 55 nonstop destinations.
