Logistics firm taps Azerbaijan airline for Cincinnati cargo flights
American Shipper / Eric Kulisch / April 6, 2022Like most freight agents and logistics managers, Crane Worldwide Logistics doesn’t want to own aircraft, vessels or warehouses. The non-asset-based model promotes flexibility and higher margins. But the calculus changes when there isn’t enough transportation space to efficiently move customers’ goods.International passenger flying is still half of what it was two years ago, before the pandemic, and all-cargo aircraft are mostly booked on major trade lanes. Waiting to reserve space close to the desired departure date is a recipe for delay. To lock up dedicated cargo capacity, and bypass congested U.S. gateways, Crane Worldwide recently launched a major air charter program, buying 82 entire flights from Baku, Azerbaijan-based Silk Way West Airlines and routing them to less-crowded Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG).Crane is basically acting as a quasi airline, managing every aspect of air transport from sales to door delivery except flying the aircraft. Renting full plane loads for long periods is trending in air cargo because cross-border trade is strong, ocean freight is spilling over to avoid port delays and airlift capacity is still 10% below 2019 levels.Prior to the pandemic, the third-party logistics provider limited itself to prepurchasing blocks of space with airlines on popular shipping lanes “and that’s really impossible today,” said Chad Taylor, Crane’s executive vice president of global operations, in an interview. “There’s just not enough capacity out there. If you don’t do some sort of program with these freighters, then you just have to get out of the airfreight market, especially from Asia. It’s just too difficult to get reliable service” with passenger or scheduled cargo airlines. With freight forwarders waiting up to a week to recover shipments at Chicago O’Hare International Airport because short-staffed cargo terminals are flooded by all-cargo aircraft, and excessively high trucking rates, Crane opted for a centrally located secondary airport where cargo would get priority attention at a better cost. The third-party logistics provider hired Silk Way to operate the cargo flights utilizing Boeing 747-400 or 747-8 freighters from Bangkok to CVG and on to Luxembourg through the remainder of the year. Planes are landing once a week at CVG until May, when Crane will start a weekly service from Hong Kong to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky via Luxembourg. Both planes return to Luxembourg and then feed back into Silk Way’s network in Baku.Bangkok is a major export center for automotive and high-tech goods. Taylor said Crane Worldwide also trucks freight from Saigon, Malaysia and Singapore to the Thai capital to fill up the 747s.[](https://local12.com/news/local/veterans-receive-warm-welcome-after-returning-from-honor-flight-washington-dc-capital-memorials-monuments-cvg-cincinnati-local-12-wkrc-tristate-ohio-kentucky-indiana-news)[FULL STORY HERE](https://www.freightwaves.com/news/logistics-firm-taps-azerbaijan-airline-for-cincinnati-cargo-flights)\- COMPLETE WITH PHOTOSRead more - Mar 31, 2022

The Kentucky Side Podcast: CVG emerges from pandemic; Navigating intergenerational workplaces
LINK / Michael Monks / March 22, 2022The COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted the travel industry, both leisure and business. But as case counts rapidly decline people are returning to the skies in droves. In fact, the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) is seeing a spike in travel for spring break. In this episode of The Kentucky Side with Michael Monks, CVG CEO Candace McGraw talks about how the airport continued to grow in spite of the pandemic’s challenges, and also shares how it pivoted quickly to accommodate many travelers to Los Angeles for the Cincinnati Bengals’ appearance in the Super Bowl.We also talk about intergenerational workplaces. For the first time, there are people from five generations in the workforce – and while phrases like “OK, Boomer” can be funny in certain instances, finding ways to build upon the strengths of different age groups among employees is key to an organization’s success. Miami University Professor of Management and Leadership Megan Gerhardt explains.Plus, before he was known as the Wizard of Westwood, legendary college basketball coach John Wooden got his first break in coaching at Dayton High School.[FULL STORY HERE](https://linknky.com/podcasts/2022/03/22/the-kentucky-side-podcast-cvg-emerges-from-pandemic-navigating-intergenerational-workplaces/) - COMPLETE WITH AUDIORead more - Mar 18, 2022

Silk Way West Airlines ramps up cargo at CVG Airport
Aircargo News / Rebecca Jeffrey / March 18, 2022Silk Way West Airlines, operated in conjunction with Crane Worldwide Logistics, will operate 80 inbound and 80 outbound flights at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) this year. The new operations, at the north end of the airport where FexEx also operates, will contribute to around 14,400 tons of cargo at CVG.Planes arriving from Asia and Europe will land once a week until the summer months, at which time activity will ramp up to two flights a week.Trego-Dugan Aviation will be providing ground handling support for Silk Way West at CVG.“This has been a great collaboration, and we’ve been happy to assist with coordination, including connecting these companies to local partners,” said Candace McGraw, chief executive officer, CVG Airport. “As we build out this service for additional cargo carriers, we look forward to what’s to come.”Cargo handling has expanded at CVG over the last several years as DHL and Amazon have grown their hub presence. At the end of 2021, cargo tonnage was up 18% over 2020 and eclipsed 100% growth over the last five years. While most cargo planes and activity, including unloading, sorting and reloading, takes place on the south end of the airport campus, general cargo activity also takes place on the north end.In August 2021, [Amazon Air opened its new $1.5bn air hub at CVG](https://www.aircargonews.net/sectors/e-commerce-logistics/amazon-air-opens-1-5bn-us-cargo-hub/) that will serve as the e-commerce giant’s central US cargo hub.[](https://www.wvxu.org/local-news/2022-05-04/new-tech-at-cvg-will-help-streamline-pre-covid-sized-crowds)[FULL STORY HERE](https://www.aircargonews.net/cargo-airport/silk-way-west-airlines-ramps-up-cargo-at-cvg-airport/)Read more - Mar 1, 2022
CVG explores the use of AI to predict terminal crowding
Future Travel Experience / March, 2022Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG), a member of the [FTE Innovation Hub](https://www.fte-hub.com/), has teamed up with the University of Cincinnati (UC) to explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to predict crowding and enhance the passenger experience throughout the airport.CVG engaged UC College of Engineering and Applied Science aerospace engineering doctoral student Javier Viaña to utilize airport data to create a software programme to help the airport predict when travelers arrive at the airport, broken down into 15-minute increments. By leveraging data collected by another programme previously developed by CVG, Viaña has been able to specifically model queue lines at the security checkpoint.“The main objective of this work is to improve the passenger experience and inform operational decision-making at the airport,” said Candace McGraw, Chief Executive Officer, CVG. “The modelling done by Javier provides the airport and our business partners reliable data to prepare our operations based on passenger arrival predictions, potentially reducing crowding and wait times along the travel journey from parking and check-in to security screening and concessions.”CVG engaged UC College of Engineering and Applied Science aerospace engineering doctoral student Javier Viaña (pictured) to utilise airport data to help the airport predict when travelers arrive at the terminal. “What makes this model unique is how UC is using artificial intelligence based on fuzzy logic, a type of computer decision making that allows us to provide a human-like explanation for its predictions,” said Javier Viaña. “We refer to this type of algorithms as explainable and transparent.”The collaboration is a direct result of a multi-year memorandum of understanding (MOU) between UC and CVG. The MOU provides the University’s research talent and emergent technologies a living-laboratory environment (the airport) that is a mutually beneficial relationship.[FULL STORY HERE](https://www.futuretravelexperience.com/2022/03/cvg-explores-the-use-of-ai-to-predict-terminal-crowding/) - COMPLETE WITH VIDEO AND PICTURESRead more - Feb 28, 2022
