CVG Airport adopts Veovo's Curb-to-Flight passenger flow management for data-driven passenger enhancements
(Hebron, Ky, USA / London, United Kingdom – May 10, 2021) - Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) is partnering with [Veovo](https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fveovo.com%2F&data=04%7C01%7Csdeatherage%40cvgairport.com%7C538cb67793684f40d94d08d913bbd78e%7C6a1858161bcc4c24b4487abfacd1c666%7C0%7C0%7C637562520967039443%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=fCjqr6k6XF3Cxb9gvpcuuzy%2B0vd9yxDCyKd1tDfwgYE%3D&reserved=0) (a London-based technology provider) to expand data input at the airport.CVG was the first airport in the United States, to deploy internet of things (IoT) sensor technology in the security checkpoint to monitor wait times. That project and the data that was drawn allowed CVG and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to make data-driven decisions on staff scheduling, which improved wait times and passenger experience.CVG is now adopting Veovo’s airport-wide flow management technology to obtain a greater understanding of passenger movement beyond the security checkpoint and into other areas of the terminal and concourses. Specifically, the airport will be able to see how travelers, processes and airlines interact and interconnect."Providing memorable and predictable journeys, from the driveway to the runway, is a top priority for CVG, and data is the key enabler for our vision,” said Brian Cobb, chief innovation officer, CVG. “Innovative solutions, like those provided by Veovo, allow us to gather and analyze data in real-time and proactively put it to work. We will be able to make better plans and improve productivity, respond to customer needs faster and tap into revenue growth opportunities.”The rollout of the technology will be done in phases throughout the year. Once complete, historical and live data will enable CVG to make daily operational decisions as well as long-term facility improvement plans. For example, by understanding gate arrival patterns by flight, CVG can adjust call-to-gate times or airline gate assignments to minimize crowding. The airport can evaluate how disruptions affect passenger behavior to prevent issues and/or mitigate their impact. Dwell and flow data can be used to drive strategic plans for layout configuration, signage, food and beverage placements and gate assignments. As passenger traffic returns, these insights will help the airport grow efficiently with the right staff resourcing and concession planning to improve product offerings and placements for travelers. “CVG is one of a growing number of airports globally that have come to recognise the intrinsic value of managing and understanding passenger movements throughout their concourse,” said James Williamson, chief executive officer, Veovo. “Because traveler behavior can vary, depending on volumes, time of day, travel class, destination and various other factors, this technology is invaluable in developing an even greater knowledge of the customer journey and helping to shape its future.”Background on the tech: The Veovo platform bundles AI-powered analytics, data from movement sensors and rich visualisations, to provide live and historic insights into passenger occupancy, dwell times and movement patterns by flight. This data can be viewed for specific areas, grouped areas, and eventually the entire facility including the Terminal and both Concourses.CVG joins a host of other airports, including Amsterdam, Auckland, Bristol, Birmingham and Keflavik, that have moved beyond single-process measurement, to terminal-wide insights. The post-pandemic world will only accelerate the focus on the passenger experience for the airport; both to attract customers who have a choice of departure/destination airports and airlines who want routes to/from airports that are economical and provide the best travel experience.About CVG Airport:The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) has been serving passengers since 1947. CVG welcomed more than 9.1 million passengers in 2019, serving a record number of local passengers. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, CVG still offers the most nonstop destinations and the lowest average airfares in the region. As the 7th largest cargo airport in North America and home to the Amazon Air Hub and DHL Express Global Superhub, CVG is diversified in both passenger and cargo operations. With an annual impact of $6.8 billion on the local economy, the airport drives regional growth and remains a leader in innovation. Cincinnati Business Courier / Chris Wetterich / April 20, 2021Fares at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport hit their lowest level in 25 years for the fourth quarter of 2020, the latest period for which data is available.CVG’s average fare for the quarter was $237, well below the national average of $261. CVG’s fares were the 20th-cheapest in the nation out of the top 100 domestic airports. The pandemic has drastically reduced fares at CVG and most airports nationwide, with demand for travel reduced compared to before the pandemic. However, bookings continue to increase and airlines believe passengers are ready to travel to leisure destinations, while they await the return of lucrative business travelers. In the fourth quarter of 2019, CVG’s average fare was $335.96, not adjusted for inflation. As it has for years now, CVG's fares are lower than all other nearby airports. It also was the fourth-cheapest airport to fly from in the Midwest, with fares being less expensive at both Chicago airports and Cleveland’s Hopkins International Airport. The most-expensive airport to fly to or from was Fayetteville, Ark., with a $337 average fare, while the cheapest was Sanford, Fla., with a $104 average fare.In May, CVG will offer new service, including: May 14: Flights on Sun Country Airlines to Minneapolis. May 20: Flights on Alaska Airlines to Seattle May 27-29: United Airlines begins service to four new leisure destinations, Pensacola, Fla.; Portland, Maine; Charleston, S.C.; and Hilton Head Island, S.C. Air Cargo World: CVG reports 38% cargo traffic growth in early 2021, preps for more expansion
Air Cargo World / Caryn Livingston / April 6, 2021After reporting a 14.8% year-over-year increase in cargo tonnage during 2020, the cargo handle at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) is already up by around 38% YoY for the first two months of 2021, to 252,509 short tons (229,072 tonnes), thanks to [exponential growth in e-commerce and express traffic](https://aircargoworld.com/news/with-volumes-up-and-yields-down-the-2020-air-express-business-was-a-lot-like-2019/).An aggressive slate of cargo projects in support of major express and e-commerce operators is set to open this year, and airport leadership has already identified a new area for expansion west of the airport and adjacent to a taxiway, dubbed “hangar row” by CVG Chief Executive Candace McGraw.CVG is the Americas hub for integrator DHL and the primary Amazon Air hub, although Amazon’s own facilities at the airport are still under construction, with the first phase to open later this year, McGraw told _Air Cargo World_ in an interview this week.A multi-tenant facility developed by Aeroterm already opened in March, with FedEx as the primary tenant, but the airport is prioritizing additional development under its new five-year strategic plan launched at the beginning of 2021. [Aeroterm told _Air Cargo World_ when its facility opened](https://aircargoworld.com/news/airports/new-aeroterm-cargo-facility-opens-at-cvg/) that it planned to develop additional space adjacent to that facility, potentially adding another 120,000 square feet of space for cargo operations. DHL also has another 50-acre parcel adjacent to its current facility, and McGraw said the integrator is considering expanding there. There is also significant land available off-airport, McGraw said, including a 237-acre site that is currently being developed primarily for distribution facilities. In total, CVG has 7,700 acres under its control, McGraw said.Apart from the current express facility development, the new hangar row CVG hopes to add during the next five years could accommodate four or five hangars, McGraw said, and would likely include support facilities such as avionics shops and MRO operations.“We would like to build that sometime over the next five years, working either for individual hangar construction or build\[ing\] a whole campus out and we’re really starting to explore that now,” McGraw said. “I think that would help drive additional cargo development here if we can do some of the MRO operations, avionics, and maybe even some passenger aircraft overnights there.”Building out the airport’s passenger aircraft accommodations could help pull in new general cargo business from combination carriers, an operator type that McGraw said CVG is interested in attracting.“I would love for them to be here and love to talk to them about that,” McGraw said. “Happy to talk to all takers.”[FULL STORY HERE (subscription-based)](https://aircargoworld.com/news/airports/cvg-reports-38-cargo-traffic-growth-in-early-2021-preps-for-more-expansion/)Read more - Apr 12, 2021
