About a year ago, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport officials hailed the arrival of an obscure, international cargo carrier, Silk Way West Airlines.
On the surface, it seemed like a rather minor player. Silk Way West would move cargo from CVG to Asia and Europe once or twice a week, depending on the season. Compare that with DHL Express and Amazon Air, both of which have their North American superhubs at CVG, and the dozens of flights they launch from the airport every day.
But airport leadership believed it was the first victory in a much bigger strategy to double down on CVG’s strength as a leading international cargo airport and build a new business line.
Over the past decade, CVG has diversified all aspects of its business, adding airlines and dramatically increasing cargo traffic, becoming the 14th-largest cargo airport in the world. Now, CEO Candace McGraw is seeking to do even more by adding to the types of goods leaving from CVG’s runways and making the airport a one-stop shop where cargo and passenger airlines can repair and enhance their aircraft.
