United Airlines is beefing up its smaller, regional jets that connect people from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport to larger markets such as Chicago and New York, adding first-class cabins and other amenities to 50-seat jets.

By next year, six of United’s eight daily flights to Chicago and two of its five daily flights to Newark, N.J., will be on the CRJ-550, which has 10 first-class seats, 20 economy-plus seats and 20 standard economy seats. Passengers flying on United’s CVG-Chicago route today may be on the jet.

Eventually, every United flight to those markets will be on a plane with a first-class cabin. Business travelers from CVG often connect internationally on those flights, and they want the premium experience on their entire trip, United officials said.

The jets also will offer wireless Internet service and roller bag storage for every passenger aboard. Customers told United they did not like having to gate-check baggage and then wait for it to be unloaded at the jet bridge.
