Carriers at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport moved more cargo in 2021 than at any point in the airport’s history, which allowed the airport to reach pre-pandemic levels of landed weight, despite the continued absence of most business travelers because of the pandemic.
That’s significant because the airport’s revenues depend in part upon the tonnage airplanes carry as they land at the airport. It includes both cargo and passengers.
CVG set new all-time monthly records in both November and December during the busy holiday season for the amount of cargo that landed – 158,273 tons in November and 168,059 tons in December. The airport already had set an all-time cargo record in October as well.
For the year, carriers brought 1.7 million tons of cargo through the airport. Some months, CVG was the 21st-largest cargo airport in the world, while in others, it was the 20th-largest.
“You can’t say enough about cargo,” said Bobby Spann, CVG’s vice president for external affairs.
Cargo now represents 69% of the landed weight at the airport, with passenger operations comprising 31%.
