CVG Passenger Growth Continues

12/21/2016

Local Traffic Up 27 Consecutive Months

Dec. 21, 2016 — CVG continues its trend of record growth. Year-over-year local passenger volume grew 15.6 percent and exceeded 500,000 passengers to and from CVG. This was the strongest November for local passenger volume since 2001 and marks the 27th consecutive month for year-over-year local passenger growth. Total passenger volume, which includes connecting passengers, was also up 10.3 percent, making November the 19th consecutive month for total airport growth and the best overall November since 2010.

“We continue to see fantastic results in passenger growth at CVG, due in large part to lower fares and the steady expansion of air service options,” said Candace McGraw, chief executive officer, CVG. “Our service offering this Thanksgiving was up 18 percent, and this Christmas, capacity will be up more than 15 percent compared to 2015. We are proud to be the region’s hometown airport and thank the community for the support they continue to give CVG.”

While much of CVG’s growth can be attributed to low-cost carriers, which now account for 23 percent of local traffic, all carriers are experiencing strong year-over-year passenger growth. In November, Delta Air Lines improved 7.1 percent, United 9.8 percent and American 6.6 percent.  Low-cost carrier Frontier grew 71 percent as part of the introduction of five new routes, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Tampa, Phoenix and Fort Lauderdale. Allegiant grew 33 percent with the launch of five new routes to New York-Newark, Destin, Austin, New Orleans and Baltimore/Washington D.C.

Cargo tonnage at CVG also continues to set records. In November, more than 70,000 tons of cargo was handled marking the third best month overall in the history of CVG. CVG is on pace to exceed more than 800,000 tons in total cargo for the year and maintains its ranking as the eight largest cargo airport in the U.S. based on FAA statistics.

CVG leads the region with nonstop service to 54 airport destinations and more than 160 peak-day departures. In 2016, CVG has added more than 175,000 new low-cost carrier seats to its product offering, and now offers year-round or seasonal low-cost carrier service to 27 destinations, including Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
