Business Courier: CVG clears runway for massive cargo campus
Cincinnati Business Courier / Chris Wetterich / June 30, 2023About a year ago, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport officials hailed the arrival of an obscure, international cargo carrier, Silk Way West Airlines. On the surface, it seemed like a rather minor player. Silk Way West would move cargo from CVG to Asia and Europe once or twice a week, depending on the season. Compare that with DHL Express and Amazon Air, both of which have their North American superhubs at CVG, and the dozens of flights they launch from the airport every day.But airport leadership believed it was the first victory in a much bigger strategy to double down on CVG’s strength as a leading international cargo airport and build a new business line.Over the past decade, CVG has diversified all aspects of its business, adding airlines and dramatically increasing cargo traffic, becoming the 14th-largest cargo airport in the world. Now, CEO Candace McGraw is seeking to do even more by adding to the types of goods leaving from CVG’s runways and making the airport a one-stop shop where cargo and passenger airlines can repair and enhance their aircraft.[FULL STORY HERE](https://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2023/06/30/cvg-cargo-campus.html)Read more - Jun 27, 2023

Business Courier: CVG construction: Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport looks to overhaul front entrance, tunnel
Cincinnati Business Courier / Chris Wetterich / June 23, 2023Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport has hired a designer to overhaul the look of its front entrance, the tunnel between the terminal and gates and make it easier for passengers and guests to find their way around. The airport’s board has approved a $1 million contract with Cincinnati-based design firm Gresham Smith to lead the project. “The CVG entrance lacks a signature element that supports a sense of place that welcomes our customers and represents our brand,” according to an airport description of the project. “Identifying a sense of place will assist in the development of the sense of familiarity of our region we envision our passengers will experience when they visit our facilities.”[FULL STORY HERE](https://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2023/06/23/cvg-looks-to-overhaul-front-entrance-tunnel.html)Read more - Jun 15, 2023

Business Courier: British Airways at CVG: First new trans-Atlantic flight in five years launches
Cincinnati Business Courier / Chris Wetterich / June 6, 2023Complete with Shakespeare, music by British artists and meat pies, British Airways launched the first new trans-Atlantic flight at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport since 2018 on June 5, ushering in a new era at the airport.London is the second nonstop destination CVG has to and from Europe, with Delta Air Lines’ Paris being the other.“One of the things this flight does is help all of the businesses in town and helps grow business,” said CVG CEO Candace McGraw, citing FIS Global, DHL, GE Aerospace, “all of who have told us they will make good use of this flight.”Before the flight departed, actors performed a scene from A Midsummer Night’s Dream on a stage with the U.S. and U.K. flags as a backdrop, a singer belted out tunes from Adele and other artists from Britain, all while passengers feasted on meat pies and cakes. The flights to Heathrow Airport will be on a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with three cabins – economy, premium economy and a lie-flat business product.Such aircraft will be retrofitted to provide a more private, business-class suite by the end of 2024 or early 2025, according to British Airways. The flight will be five times per week during peak summer travel season – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Freight Waves: British Airways brings belly cargo to Cincinnati/N. Kentucky airport
Freight Waves / Eric Kulisch / June 1, 2023As the U.S. home base for Amazon Air and DHL Express, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) moves large volumes of express shipments. Now the airport is positioning itself to attract general cargo carried by passenger and freighter operators interested in bypassing crowded international gateways for faster turnarounds.Officials have arranged to process significant amounts of cargo to be carried by a new British Airways (LSE: IAG) passenger service and recently struck a deal with a private company to develop an air cargo warehouse facility with airside access on 4.5 acres of airport property.British Airways is scheduled to launch nonstop service between London Heathrow and CVG on Monday. Flights will operate five times a week utilizing Boeing 787-800 Dreamliners, switching to four times weekly on Boeing 777-200 aircraft during the winter season. Airline officials were drawn by the fact that Dayton’s population bleeds into the Cincinnati area and there are millions of people within a two-hour drive of CVG.British Airways selected Miami-based Alliance Ground International, a fast-growing airport services company backed by private equity, to provide warehousing and pallet buildup/breakdown and sorting. AGI is occupying a 15,000-square-foot building where staff will bring cargo offloaded from British Airways flights and send out exports. The only other carrier that provides trans-Atlantic service from CVG is Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL), which flies to Paris.Although the route is ostensibly for passenger business, cargo opportunities likely factored into British Airways’ decision too. The 787-800 has room in the lower hold for more than 16 tons of cargo. Larger 777-200s can carry 22 tons of cargo and baggage. Stakeholders anticipate the new service will draw substantial interest for goods movement.[FULL STORY HERE](https://www.freightwaves.com/news/british-airways-brings-belly-cargo-to-cincinnatin-kentucky-airport)Read more
